If the layout of your lawn, patio or deck area is not well structured, your garden design will never look as good as you hoped regardless of the aesthetics of the plants you choose.

Gardens are organic things. Even though your garden may have a good foundation, over time it will need additional planting or even a total replant. Our planting service includes the preparation of planting plans, sourcing and selection of plants and finally the setting out and planting of plants.
A & R Landscapes Cumbria can offer on-going advice to our clients on landscaping, planting and garden styling issues.

Hedge Planting

In a world where the balance of nature has to be addressed, wildlife is very important and needs to be provided for. With hedgerows providing wind breaks and shelter, habitat linkage for animals, insect and seed dispersal and nature's larder for animals and people, hedgerows are vital for habitat conservation.

A & R Landcsapes Cumbria hedge planting considers a diverse structure, and contains a range of tree and shrub species. We aim for unique species composition, dependant on location within the landscape, its size, shape and relationship to neighbouring natural habitats.

You can create an attractive boundary with hedges and tHey provide a place to live for wildlife as an added bonus. The best time of year to plant hedges in in the autumn as the soil is nice and warm still, it's not inundated with water and easy to dig. Deciduous hedges such as beech, hawthorn and hornbeam can be planted any time from leaf fall. This is typically from mid-autumn until late winter.

1.

HEDGE PLANTS

Hedging plants form an attractive boundary & provide privacy.

Hedging plants are cheaper than instant hedging and if kept under control are effctive hedges.
They are environmentally friendly as they are perfect for birds and other wildlife. Conifers, Buxus, Taxus, Hawthorn and Viburnum are popular choices and can help soften a fence line.

2.

SCREENING TREES

Screening trees help provide privacy.

If you require more privacy in your garden or you have a view you would rather not see, then screening tress are a good choice. Beech and Hornbeam are a popular choice, and with evergreen varieties not losing foliage in winter, this provides privacy all year round. A mix of evergreen and deciduous species can add interest while they hide the views behind.

3.

INSTANT HEDGING

Instant Hedging will make an instant impact on your garden.

Instant hedging is ideal for screening your boundary, softening fence lines or for privacy. Instant hedging can be expensive, but there are many benefits to pre-established hedging. Plant troughs are already spaced out and can be double planted for a dense hedge. It can also give you a uniform height and is great for wind and noise reduction.

4.

BARE ROOT HEDGING

The cheaper alternative.

There is a wide range of bare root plants available and they are significantly cheaper than instant hedging as they do not come pre grown in containers or troughs.

5.

NATIVE HEDGING

Established before the English Channel

'Native' hedging have been growing in the UK since before the formation of the English Channel. This type of hedging is beneficial as it is fully acclimated to the UK weather and soil and is low maintenance. Native plants are also resilient to long spells of dry weather.

6.

lOW HEDGING

Ideal low garden barriers.

Low hedging is very good for forming low barriers in a garden. If you have areas to separate off like decking or vegetable patches. In many cases low hedging can be more effective than tall hedging.
